The Yakuza (also known as gokudo or Japanese Mafia) are transnational organized crime syndicates in Japan. Characterized by strict hierarchical structures, samurai-like rituals, and full-body tattoos, they historically controlled gambling, extortion, and the pleasure industry. Today, their numbers have dropped to record lows (under 19,000 members) due to severe government crackdowns, social isolation, and an aging demographic.
