Pranayama is the yogic practice of focusing on breath. In classical yoga, the breath is associated with prana, thus, pranayama is a means to elevate the prana-shakti, or life energies. Pranayama is described in Hindu texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

The Sanskrit word pranayama is derived from the roots prana and ayama. "Prana" means "life force" or "breath," while "ayama" means "to control," "to restrain," or "to extend". Therefore, pranayama translates to "control of life force" or "extension of life force" through breath control techniques.
